TVE has participated in many major steelworks and ferro-alloy projects in South Africa and undertaken bankable feasibility reports for a number of international steelworks projects. Some of our major projects are summarised below:
ARCELOR MITTAL STEEL (PREVIOUSLY ISCOR)
Civil and structural engineering services for their three major steelworks:
Between 1973 and 2007, the major projects have been the high voltage electrical reticulation (comprising main electrical yard and substations), medium mill foundations, control rooms, the Blast Furnace civils (including furnace foundations, slag pits, tapping floors, raw materials storage, foundations, blower house and control building), briquetting plant, induction furnace, wire works, sinter plant electro-scrubbers, Pulverised Coal Injection project for blast furnace, and infrastructure around the Effluent Treatment Plant.
The first, second and third phases of the modernisation programme between 1980 and 1995 comprising the installation of two 125 ton arc furnaces, a 300 000 tpa COREX plant, and a continuous slab casting plant with ladle furnace and as a joint venture with Technometal for the installation of the VD/VOD plant for stainless steel production as a turnkey project.
A direct reduction plant for the production of 720 000 tpa of sponge iron, sinter plant electro-scrubbers, modernisation of the hot strip mill, blast furnace blower house and scrubber installations.
Project management and engineering services including financial control and construction supervision for melt shop comprising an electric arc furnace, continuous billet casting plant and extensions to the rolling mill facilities.
During the period 1993 to1995 TvE were requested to investigate the feasibility of establishing new steel works in India. A preliminary feasibility study was made for the State of Orissa where the plant was to be designed to make optimal use of local raw materials, namely coal and iron ore. The technology was based on using blasts furnaces, electric arc furnaces, slab casters as well as hot and cold rolling equipment. On completion of the feasibility study the Orissa project was put on hold but recent technical articles have indicated that it may have been revived by others.

NON-FERROUS FOUNDRY & ROLLING MILLS

Supervision of an integrated non-ferrous foundry and rolling mill facility to produce high quality copper and brass strip for an existing press shop manufacturing small bore ammunition and shell casings.
COLUMBUS STAINLESS STEEL Z MILL 3 & Z MILL 4 COLD MILLS, Middelburg
Columbus Stainless started as the only stainless steel producer in Southern Africa. It started in 1926 as RMB Alloys, where the company later became Southern Cross Steel and later Columbus Stainless. In 2003 Columbus started an expansion program which consisted of an installation of ZM3 and ZM4 coil mills. In a joint venture, civil and structural detailed engineering, tender documentation and construction management for the Z3 and Z4 extensions were done, where TvE was responsible for the design of the structural steelwork, 2 - 40 ton high class cranes and the building foundations.
AECI, Sasolburg factory
Design and preparation of civil and structural drawings for the carbide furnace complex, including handling and storage of raw materials, foundations and buildings for two 100 MVA carbide furnaces and carbide bunkers.
SAMANCOR, Ferrometals, Witbank
Project management and engineering for a granulation plant including all civil, mechanical and electrical installations for additional cooling towers and ferrochrome handling and storage.
Project Management, all engineering disciplines, preparation of tender documents, financial control, and construction supervision with associated commissioning.
The modernisation of two large ferrous foundries for producing engine block and malleable iron automotive transmission components. Included replacement of cupola furnaces with modern mechanised scrap handling equipment, induction furnaces and automated metal casting plants and a continuous electric malleabilising furnace for heat treatment.
